What a beautiful billboard by artist David Shrigley, my recent daily obsession. (I've ordered two of his books, and you should too.) A whole world's insecurities pasted onto a billboard in uneven circles. They're quite depressing thoughts, yeah? But when I finished reading it, I felt a sense of.... joy? Why? A million reasons, but here are three. Reason 1: This is printed on a billboard. THIS is printed on a billboard. It's not beer, it's not women, it's not a university, and yet, it could be all those things. It encompasses so much but mentions none of it! It's brilliant, and it's printed on a billboard. And that is amazing, and that alone emits a tinge of joy. Reason 2: "I'm not the only one," it secretly says. Also, another reason to feel joy, unless you're a hipster emo and want to be the only person who can feel the way you do. Reason 3: That glorious last sentence. "I am in a bit of a rut creatively as well." The only sentence out of the whole things that people might not feel will apply to them. [So the fat one might be one too, but really, no one sits around thinking, I need to watch how many cool things I do because I don't want to get 'too creative.' But I believe thin people who know they're thin would like to continue to be thin and are frightened by the idea of being fat. Not all, but many people I personally know are.] But to me, "I am in a bit of a rut creatively as well," should get noticed by all people because there are people who think they're creative and those who don't. And those who consider themselves creative know exactly how this sentence feels and those who don't consider themselves creative have to question whether this sentence applies to them, which, of course, it does if they consider themselves "not creative!" It's hilarious. It's smart. I'm laughing. |
