Welcome to the New Year. Last year was great, and for being someone who is slightly superstitious with the number 13, it was probably the most exciting year for me. I suppose any year anyone travels alone for the first time would be an exciting year, but many more things happened than that. But let's not linger on the past! Let's look now at the present and forward to the future! I've updated my site a bit, so poke around. My Vimeo page is being used for a few applications as my portfolio, so that is why most of my videos are private. They'll be back up soon! I added a page for my collaboration installation (it goes by many names but is actually called:) "Memory Box." Check that out for sure! I also added a few pictures to "a video concerto" if you want to see those too. I added a Pro Musica tab for those who might be interested in learning more about it. I love being in this organization. The people are simply fantastic people that have the best hearts. This isn't suppose to turn into a pitch for it, but every single donation made is given back to a student. How amazing is that! It's just full of kindness and giving. Check it out sometime! So far in January, I have started watching Doctor Who and finished up Once Upon a Time. Where has Doctor Who been my whole life? Also, I don't think that Once Upon a Time is that great of a show but I just want to know what happens in the end! My favorite character, Gold/Rumpelstiltskin, is a typical favorite character of mine. Sort of like Thomas from Downton Abbey, which IS actually a great show. (Yo, you watchin' Jeff?) The character that is misunderstood but has good deep down. Typical. I know I said that we would look at the now and future, but in last semester alone, I made roughly seven videos. As a not-video major, I say that's pretty good, especially doing everything except for the acting/performing alone, as well as trying to finish up my classes for my real major! I am student teaching in roughly four days, and I am anxious. I am also anticipating the response of a few different universities about grad school. I have an offer at one, which is my top university. I am also anxious for this upcoming semester, but at the end of it, I will hopefully have my first degree in music education, know what my summer plans are (jobs searching for eternity until then..), know if I am going to graduate school, and hopefully have some awesome experiences of the kids I'll be teaching. I found this video from Lights Film School about sound design and wanted to share it because people don't really know what it entails. It's at the bottom of this post. My goal is to become the music editor of movies/tv/films, as my background and passion (such a strange word, yeah? "passion") are in music. I love movie soundtracks and love becoming emotionally attached to movies (can't watch Ingmar Bergman movies without taking breaks...), so I want to promote others to do the same. But how does that relate to teaching?! I still want to be a music teacher! Honestly, I day dream about teaching students contemporary music. The way I see it, soundtracks are one gateway to that world because film music IS contemporary music. Music being made today (that is the definition I am using for this post). I remember a talk that Nadia Sirota (violist, check her out here) gave about a month ago. She talked about teaching true music appreciation by starting with the music of today and working backwards through history. With learning about music of today, kids will realize that "classical" music is still being created and stop the silly notion that music is a pointless career. I never say anything when people tell me there isn't any money to be made in music or the classic "you'll never get a job," but my soul twinges a bit each time I hear it. Remember when we were all in high school and people would say, "Oh, they'll never make it" just based on hearing the person's major? How ridiculous is that? High schoolers don't know anything about the realities of getting a job. Therefore, my goal is to reconstruct the terrible mindset that some kid's dream job is unobtainable. I need to encourage kids the way I have been encouraged. As my theory professor told me, "If you work hard, you'll get to where you need to be." That's basically all I'm trying to do myself. Then, I can help other kids do the same. It's amazing how many people are willing to help you if you let them know what your dreams are. With that, I hope everyone tries something new this year and does something they never imagined they could! Happy new year to everyone! Here's the video: |
